my website and critique

Okay so I got my web site set up. It’s very plain but I put a picture of my 5 month old daughter:) here is the link: http://mason.gmu.edu/~cshort1/

As for the critique there were so many choices… it took me forever just to pick one. I really liked RedRidingHood and Storyland. However, I chose The Fall of the Site of Marsha. I don’t know why but I thought no one would write about it. The fall of Marsha site is about this lady Marsha who built a site for angels. She has some sort of weird obsession towards the angels and is inviting them to check out her site. Her page is done over three different time periods: the summer, spring and fall.

In the spring of 1998, it looked like a regular web site. She explains how she always liked angel stuff, which seems pretty ordinary because a lot of people are a collector of angels. However, she says that things weren’t doing to good in her life because she lost her father and job last year. Her friend Bits told her to design a web page and her husband could help her out with the HTML codes. Overall when you first looked at summer, there is nothing wrong. The World Wide Web has many sites just like hers.

However, when you take a look at the spring and fall. It’s like WOW! What is going here, supposedly the angels were taking over the web page and they would write mean things about Marsha but then Mike would go and scratch it out, but you can still see what they wrote. In the summer they accused her of neglecting her father and that she was sinner. The angels kept writing that Bit’s is on their side. Okay, well at least the summer was readable once you clicked on the fall; it has to be read many times to even understand what those angels were writing. They had completely taken over the page, adding the letter "X" into everything. This freaked Marsha out so bad she was not even contributing to the page anymore. Bits and Mike wrote that she is resting and under medication.

The most change is the obviously the destruction of pictures on the site, the angels are all twisted around like someone went and cut up the pictures into pieces and then tried to paste them back together. In the summer and spring Marsha’s personal picture was still normal, but by the fall the picture of her was blurred and she looked liked a crazy lady.

The fall of Marsha’s site was a little creepy when the web pages became corrupt, but at the same time quite humorous (which I’m not sure if it was suppose to be). The author use links to help the audience understand what was going on and to reveal things about Marsha, like her husband cheating on her (the link was "private doors"). It was also creative for the author to break the web sites down into three different seasons because this way it was evident the changes that were occurring.

I can’t say I loved The fall of the Site of Marsha, but there was definitely something about it that intrigued me. After taking a look at some of the other electronic collections, I noticed that this was easy to understand and it didn’t require flash or any type of downloads. All you really had to do was read and click on two links.

manifesto:)

Introduction to Digital Writing and Genres is going to be a challenge for me. But what isn’t? Life itself is a challenge…

In English 344 there are many goals to accomplish and ideas to be expressed, with the exception that it’s not by paper or through Microsoft word (which most of us are familiar with). My intention is to explore genres in a way no one has done before- to mix things up and combine different styles together. While doing this, I will be brilliant with new software and computer technologies. My fellow classmates and the outside world will be enlightened with my creativity. As a senior conquering all my goals, English 344 will be my number one undertaking this semester.

As the months go by, my writing will become inspirational to all who read it. It will be absurd to stop me. With the incorporation of sounds, pictures and special effects my style of writing will be exceptional. Books, magazines and newspapers will take over my computer instead of reading the hard copy. A whole new era will form right under my nose without me even noticing it. Those that read my work will be stunned that we no longer have to be bound to a simple pen and paper.

To fulfill my expectations, I will not have any nostalgic attempts. From this class forward, my writing will change in a way that will be indescribable. Others will be astonished and envious of my ability to interpret various genres together. I will have the intelligence to apply science fiction to poetry with my eyes shut. I won’t ponder in my head to write fantasy, because my fingers will already know the magical way. It will be breathtaking to society how I have combined all these forms of writing together. People will follow in my footsteps thinking they can mimic my superb job, but I will already be miles ahead. Technology will be my pathway to success. My artistic writing style will be obtainable on the internet for the world to sample on their palate. With the number of electronic media advantages, the sky will not pose a limit to my cleverness.

I must follow direct steps to achieve these goals. A whole new vocabulary is necessary, for I want to explore the googol of words that I yet have heard or know the meaning of. There can never be enough rewriting. I must write at all times. When I’m at work. On my breaks. When I don’t want to. I must confine myself to my own little secluded bubble away from any interference to achieve perfection.

To do all this, however, it’s going to require dedication and perseverance. I must follow these essential steps:

1) I will not question myself when writing, but instead know what I have written is magnificent. Nothing I write can be wrong.
2) Writing will take over my time. This will be my passion,; consequently, outside interruptions will be out of the question.
3) I will have the potential of creating a new vocabulary for my writing.
4)Every idea that comes to mind will be written down, since none of them will be awry.
5)Editing is imperative. Synonyms and metaphors will trip off my tongue. Unpolished writing will be unacceptable.
6)Working diligently to understand all that technology has to offer is a priority.
7)I will always have something handy to jot down my thoughts.

This manifesto will be kept to demonstrate my work at the completion of my Genesis-like creation. My final project will be splendid with the effort I’m willing to put in. It’s going to be a long process, but satisfying, with nights of no sleep and thanks to many of cezvez of coffee, but all worth it at the end. I strive to be at the top and want to share my talents with everyone. Hemmingway look out! Sensational is nothing, to say the least; I want more than that. I want to be recognized for my ability to combine genres into digital writing and trust me; it’s just a matter of time. Editing will soon not be necessary- since perfection has always been one of my assets. My work will be famous in George Mason University and I look forward to the library being renamed to Christina Short Educational center; that can be assured!
